Thrownness

Inspired by Matthew Arnold's poem Dover Beach and the ideas of philosopher Martin Hedeigger.

Two people are thrown into a mysterious place where nothing is as it appears to be and where the relation between cause and effect is never stable. As they explore their surroundings they discover that space, time and themsevles are elements of a carefully constructed illusion.

The term thrownness comes from Martin Hedeigger's work. It means that wherever we are, at any moment of our lives is where we have been thrown. It is not necessary to figure out who threw us, why we have been thrown or towards where we are being thrown. 'Our essential possibility is in our freedom to choose how to attend to our thrownness...our being as possibility is shaped by the way we are with our thrownness.' (Being and Time, 1962)
